The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed this afternoon that a 63-year-old man was shot and killed earlier this morning on Danforth Avenue in Jersey City during a botched robbery.
Just after midnight, Jersey City police were dispatched to Danforth Avenue near the intersection of Kennedy Boulevard in Jersey City on a report of shots
fired and a man down, authorities said.
Responding officers found the victim — who has now been identified as George T. Smith, 63 — lying on the driveway of a Danforth Avenue home and unresponsive.
A neighbor and police officers attempted to resuscitate the victim until Emergency Medical Services arrived on the scene. The victim was transported to the Jersey City Medical Center and pronounced dead at approximately 12:55 a.m., authorities said.
The victim and his wife were returning home when they were approached by two males. One of the males took the victim’s wife’s purse and the victim attempted to get it back when he was shot in his upper torso, the Prosecutor’s Office said.
